This week I am going to be reviewing:
Toro Y Moi – What For?
I love this artist. A lot. When I found him it was love at first listen. I found him on a YouTube playlist called New Indie by Independent Music. It’s an awesome playlist to listen to; it’s very chilled out and relaxing. When Toro Y Moi came on the rest of the songs on the playlist didn’t seem to matter because his song was amazing. It was like listening to a modern version of The Beatles but with just one singer and no classy suits. This artist is truly fabulous and I feel is a must have for any musical collection no matter what you’re into.
The first song on this album that I really loved is Half Dome and this is track 8. This is a chilled out driving song for when you want to feel like you’re on a road trip with all your best friends even though you’re stuck in traffic. It’s a hard life. Honestly this song has a chilled out vibe to it which is created by the awesome bass and guitar combination that seem to carry the whole song along on a wave of chilled out sounds. It’s a sort of alternative Beach Boys vibe with a pinch of electronica and Arcade Fire thrown in. Lyrically this song is all about do what feel the best and right with a person you love. If you want to take it slow then you do that and don’t let them stop you from doing that. That is how strong relationships form by taking pace by pace. I also feel that this song is about being with the right person, whom you would care about no matter how long the wait. This is such a beautiful song to listen to and I feel is best listened to it massive headphones, turned up load and with your eyes closed.
The next song that stood out for me was track one, What You Want. This song reminds me of some of Mac DeMarco songs from his Salad Days album. This song is sticking with the overall album theme of ‘relax its just life’ type of vibe. I love songs like this one because they have a wider variety of instruments, sound effects and vocals. These sorts of things make music way more interesting to listen to and it also makes your life in some way more interesting as well. This type of song seems to just make your day seem just that little bit better than it is. Now on the lyrical side of things this song is all about literally in the title, what you want which I think is quite rare to happen. It’s all about just going with the flow and being up for whatever. These types of days are the best and this song sums them up perfectly. There is nothing I would add or take away from this song. It’s the type of song that is born to be beautiful. I also feel this song is about being lost and not knowing what you want to do with your life which, for pretty much everyone, is very relatable no matter what your age.
Overall this album is pure bliss to listen to and I best it sounds even better on vinyl. It’s just one of those albums that you stick on and just get caught up in the wash of musical talent. It’s an album to go dancing round your room to late at night. It has amazing guitar sounds that blend beautifully with the sound of the drums, which are also not too loud, not too quite but just right to set the whole base layer for this house of an album. I am so glad that I found Chazwick and his amazing beachy/80s not cares in the world vibes. They seem to be the type of vibes I am listening to at the moment because I’m kind of missing the summer that never really happened here in the UK. Don’t get me wrong it was warm but not summery for me. I’m more of a wintery person myself. So What For? is perfect because it gives me all of the summer vibes in one beautiful album. This means that I can sit in my knitwear and enjoy the summer in the winter. Honestly though go get this album as its just pure bliss to your ears. Trust me for once.
